I found this YouTube video on someone’s Facebook post, and I’m really glad I clicked on it. Not only is the music excellent, but I appreciate the passion with which these two guys play. It is really inspiring.

Britain’s Talent Just Keeps Getting Better…

By now, everyone has seen the surprising Susan Boyle perform on Britain’s Got Talent.  She made headlines and was all over the internet a couple of weeks ago.  Well, just one week after she appeared on the show, an amazing 12-yr-old boy named Shaheen Jafargholi sang and stole the limelight from Susan Boyle :

Well, I don’t know if you’ve kept following it, but here’s the latest phenom who came on the show a week after Jafargholi.  Her name is Hollie Steel and she’s only 10 yrs old.

My theory is that it’s staged so that ratings and publicity go up for the show.  But that being said, you just can’t deny the impressive God-given talent that these three people have.  Wow!

worship2On Saturday, December 13, at Alliance Fellowship Church, I’ll be participating in a Worship Conference sponsored by J-Gen for Chicago-area youth groups .  It will be a time for theological as well as musical instruction for students who are serving in worship ministry.  I’ll be partnering with some  incredible musicians/worshippers with whom I’ve served on  a number of worship teams for conferences, revival meetings, and other special events.  There will be hands-on instruction for acoustic guitar, electric guitar, keyboard, bass, drums, vocals, miscellaneous percussion, and even mixer.

This is Rochella, Michelle, Tricia, Andy, Seon, Adorito, and me playing “We Live” by Superchick at a praise night in 2005.  This song reminds me of what the psalmist wrote in Psalm 90:12 “Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”  Speaking of numbering our days, I can’t believe all of us who played the song are well into our 30s now!  So old!

I found this old video on my hard drive of me, Sandy, Andy, Aurum, and Ador (not shown) back in 2003 playing Beauty For Ashes by Shane and Shane for a praise night.  Notice Aurum’s hair (or lack thereof), and my poor use of delay on an acoustic guitar…what was I thinking?

My Mom : Journey’s newest and biggest fan

The Original Band with lead singer Steve Perry

The Original Band with lead singer Steve Perry

So, after the birth of our third son, Nathan, on July 20, my parents came from California to help us through the transition. Usually, they stay for one month. However, this time around, they decided to stay almost two months (they are going to leave on 9/15). At first, I thought, “Wow, that’s going to be a great help!” But then, I found out the real reason : There’s a Journey concert on 9/12 down in Tinley Park. And my mom has backstage passes to meet the band!

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Journey, they were a band from the 70’s and early 80’s that sang some classics like “Open Arms”, “Faithfully”, “Separate Ways”, and “Don’t Stop Believing”. The funny thing is, back then, my mom had no clue who they were.

Recently, however, she’s fallen in love with the band as they’ve begun to tour again. But here’s the twist that won her over : they have a new lead singer…And he’s FILIPINO! He’s Arnel Pineda, and his story is amazing : He was part of a cover band in the Philippines that had posted a number of their songs on YouTube, some of which were Journey songs. When Journey was looking for a new lead singer, they came across Arnel’s YouTube videos and ended up inviting him to the US to audition. When they heard him, he got the part instantly. And he simultaneously became a hero in the Philippines and among Filipinos here in America.

Well, the Journey concert in Tinley Park is tomorrow night (9/12). And the funny thing is, my mom and dad went to his hotel today (9/11) with a couple of their friends in order to bring him lunch! Here is a picture that she took with him :

I jokingly told my mom not to try to tear his shirt off…haha…

Anyway, the guy sounds amazing.  Check him out on YouTube by typing in “Journey” and “Arnel” into the search.  Then close your eyes and you’ll think you’re listening to the original Journey with Steve Perry.
